This second state is the freeze response and it’s just as much a part of your nervous system’s design as fight-or-flight is. It shows up throughout this post, so it’s worth knowing from the start that it isn’t a separate, rogue reaction. It lives inside the same branch that’s supposed to be bringing you back down to baseline.

This system commands nearly everything your body does without you thinking about it, from your breathing rate to heart rate and digestion. When it’s working the way it’s designed to, it keeps you moving fluidly between activation and recovery. It meets whatever the day asks of you, then settles back down once it’s over.
Dysregulation is what happens when that fluid movement breaks down. Instead of moving between states, your system gets stuck holding onto one. Sometimes that means the sympathetic side stays activated longer than the situation calls for. Other times it means the parasympathetic branch settles into its shutdown state instead of its rest-and-digest one. Some clinicians use the term dysautonomia to describe this pattern more broadly. Dysautonomia is a dysregulated autonomic nervous system that can show up on its own or alongside other conditions. This is especially relevant if you’re hypermobile. Identifying the Signs of a Dysregulated Nervous System
Because the autonomic nervous system reaches into nearly every organ system, the signs of a dysregulated nervous system rarely show up in just one place. Most of what follows correlates with low vagal tone and low heart rate variability, two markers of how well your body can shift between activation and recovery. A body with high HRV adapts to change more easily. A body with low HRV is less resilient and slower to bounce back, which is part of why these signs tend to stack instead of appearing in isolation. Gut symptoms are another common sign, and often the most overlooked one. Your enteric nervous system talks constantly with the rest of your nervous system through what’s known as the gut-brain axis. This is why dysregulation frequently shows up as bloating, constipation, or other digestive symptoms without an obvious dietary cause.
Cognitive/Emotional Symptoms
Dysregulation tends to surface as trouble focusing, a mind that feels foggy, or difficulty holding onto a thought long enough to finish it. This can be especially true alongside sleep loss and stress. Mood swings and irritability that feel disproportionate to what actually happened are common too, along with a sense of being on an emotional rollercoaster without a clear trigger. Research comparing people with generalized anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, and panic disorder to healthy controls found significantly reduced heart rate variability across all three groups. That pattern is consistent with sympathetic dominance, not a fixed personality trait or a lack of resilience.
When Your Body Won’t Settle
This is the pattern most people recognize first, because it’s the loud one. Your heart rate feels elevated even at rest. Your thoughts race faster than you can follow them. Small irritations land like bigger ones: a slow driver, a spilled cup of coffee, a text that takes too long to get a reply. Sleep gets harder to fall into and lighter once you’re there, because your body is still scanning for the next thing to respond to. It’s often a sign your nervous system is oscillating between the wired state and the shutdown state, using whatever capacity is available in the wired phase and then forcing a crash to recover it. The push-crash cycle is common enough among high-achieving women that it deserves its own closer look.
None of these patterns mean your body is broken. They mean it’s doing exactly what a nervous system is built to do, protect you, just longer than the situation still calls for.
